In A HIDDEN LIFE, it's 1939 in Austria, and farmer Franz ( August Diehl) lives peacefully with his wife, Franziska ( Valerie Pachner) in a small village near the mountains. War breaks out, and Franz is sent to basic training, but when France surrenders, he's sent back home. Hoping the worst is over, the couple continues their life, working the farm and raising three girls. Unfortunately, Franz is called back to the war, where he's required to take an oath of allegiance to Adolf Hitler. Franz refuses, knowing the consequences. Franziska supports him, despite the fact that all their neighbors have begun to treat her as an outcast. Franz is arrested and awaits the trial that will decide his fate. Is it any good? No one quite captures nature's beauty and slowness as well as Terrence Malick does, but his mastery only barely saves this three-hour-long story that's full of misery, despair, and hopelessness. Based on a true story, A Hidden Life certainly tackles important subjects, not only honoring the life and sacrifice of the real Franz Jägerstätter, but also examining mob mentality and the way that neighbor can turn on neighbor over a belief, no matter how wrong-headed that belief may be. But Malick's drifting, exploratory filmmaking methods are a better fit for poetic impressions than for concrete stories and themes. He shows he doesn't quite have the temperament for smoothing out this story, making it flow, and providing some ups to counterbalance the downs. And the running time becomes oppressive. But there's no denying that A Hidden Life captures some truly striking small moments, such as the family playing in the grass beneath the mountains, the women harvesting crops, or men drifting around a prison yard, forbidden to speak. Terrence Malick creates and makes statements in his films. Often, the films are long, always beautifully shot, and require the audience to think about the point he's making.
In this movie, the focus is on living and acting on your beliefs. Franz Jagerstatter (August Diehl) was profoundly religious and had a personal relationship with his idea of God, Christ, and what was right and wrong. He was faithful to the Catholic church in his tiny Austrian hillside village, called St. Radegund. As part of his commitment to the church performed duties at the church almost every day.
Married to Franziska, Fani (Valerie Pachner) they began their life together, farming and then having two children. They farmed their land by hand and were an integral part of their small community. During harvest season, the community worked together to bring in and store the harvested crops. The town felt like it was a long way from the war that Hitler was bringing to the world. However, when the war started turning against Hitler, the army drafted all eligible men to serve the Third Reich. This included Franz.
A requirement for serving the German Army was to sign a pledge of allegiance to Hitler and the German government. Franz couldn't do this. He could not live with himself if he signed something that was against what he believed, and after the army attempted to persuade him with physical and verbal abuse, they threw him in jail. The German officers even solicited the assistance of his local priest to convince him to sign the oath of loyalty. In essence, the priest was saying that God would overlook his signing the document to save his own life and the life of his family.
He couldn't and wouldn't sign the oath and therefore spent years in jail. But Franz wasn't the only one who paid the price, so did Fani. In scenes back in the village, Fani and the girls are depicted being shunned by almost everyone in the village because her husband Franz was giving their town a bad name in the eyes of ruling Germany.
The film spends time going back and forth between Franz in prison being harassed and beaten into signing a loyalty oath and the village where Fani and the girls were continuing to be harassed by the people in her town.
The immense pressure building up in Franz didn't break him down and his wife, despite the immense movement to ostracize her and the girls, continued to support him and his decision despite what she was going through.
This film shows the cruelty of people when someone stands up for their beliefs. Because the people, including the priest, are unwilling to stand for their true feelings, they make Franz and Fani the enemy.
The physical beauty of the area of the village was well captured by the cinematographer. The integration of archival footage of Adolf Hitler and the huge parades he commanded was well done.
Diehl was terrific as Franz. His ability to show his internal struggle in a contained, in prison, way was perfect. Pacher was sublime. Her looks of intensity and passion towards other characters, amazing. Michael Nyqvist's performance as the local Bishop that tried to persuade Franz to sign the document was excellent. Alexander Radszun's performance as the judge that sentenced Franz to death was very good. You could see that he understood and struggled but had to follow his own loyalty oath. Malick wrote a script that was too long. I think the film could have had a stronger impact if it was more crisp in its presentation.
Overall: Long and pretty, it needed to be tightened up to make its point even stronger.

Franz Jägerstatter was an Austrian conscientious objector during the second world war who made a personal stand for his anti-Nazi beliefs by refusing to take the Hitler oath as a Wehrmacht conscript and in 1943 was duly executed. August Diehl (who played the lead in Raoul Pecks The Young Karl Marx) is Jägerstatter; Valerie Pachner is his wife Franziska, and there are cameos from Matthias Schoenarts as Jägerstatters defence lawyer and the late Bruno Ganz as the military tribunal president who sorrowingly questions Jägerstatter about what he sees as the stubbornness and futility of his beliefs before reluctantly passing the terrible sentence of death. The title is taken from George Eliots Middlemarch: “The growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs. ” Modest though he was, Jägerstatters own tomb is not in fact entirely unvisited, as Pope Benedict XVI beatified him in 2007, perhaps partly in contrition for the Churchs failure to oppose the Nazis. The style that Malick has found for this subject is very much the same as ever: an overpowering sense of being ecstatically, epiphanically in the present moment, an ambient feeling of exaltation created by a montage of camera shots swooning, swooping and looming around the characters who appear often to be lost in thought, to an orchestral or organ accompaniment, and a murmured voiceover narration of the characters intimate but distinctly abstract feelings and memories. (One tic is not here, in fact: the camera shot directly into a distant sunset. Perhaps it felt too American. When Malick uses black-and-white newsreel clips, it is momentarily disconcerting to be reminded of straightforwardly conventional cinematic grammar. Deploying this rhetoric in the service of such an important subject would appear to make sense. Often it does make perfect sense (although Malick has of course made a movie about the second world before: The Thin Red Line in 1998, his adaptation of James Joness novel about the battle of Guadalcanal in the Pacific. Malicks visionary approach points up at first the pure happiness of the couples life together in the village of Radegund, and then it distils the agony of Jägerstatters qualms of conscience and his dark night of the soul as he decides to defy the Nazis, and then his loneliness and anguish in prison — and Franziskas own loneliness left alone with the children, an outcast. Its religious quality is appropriate too, as Jägerstatter was a Catholic. Yet the strange thing is that the nature of Franzs intensity seems … well … not all that different from the intensity of Ryan Goslings thoughtful singer-songwriter in Malicks Song to Song (2017) or Christian Bales tortured screenwriter in Knight of Cups (2015) or Ben Afflecks engineer in To the Wonder (2014) whose woes are considerably less pressing — though their spiritual lives are undoubtedly important, and Malick is an film-maker very much concerned with the life of the spirit. It is as if Malick has taken Jägerstatter and enclosed him in exactly that same hermetically sealed environment of heightened awareness of the present moment, and unawareness of the larger context. By creating one of his signature rhapsodies around this anti-Nazi figure, Malick has in a way marooned and islanded Jägerstatter, detaching him from much of the larger historical context — though one thing the film does reveal is that Jägerstatter was not as prominent a figure as, say, Sophie Scholl, because he did not actively campaign for and publicise his views: what he did was report for a second term of duty in the Wehrmacht (having already served uncontroversially up to the fall of France) refuse to give the oath, and then submit to being bundled away. Yet Malick does succeed, to some degree, on his own terms; he attempts to give some (stylised) sense of this mans inner life: his emotional and spiritual architecture. His mother, Dominique Wiche, was a costume designer, translator and French teacher, and his father was actor Julien Schoenaerts. He made his film debut at the age of 13, alongside his father in the Belgian film Daens (1992) which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Schoenaerts enrolled in film school but was expelled for poor attendance in his second year. By age 21, he was enrolled at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Antwerp and was acting professionally in small roles on Belgian television and in Belgian film. By the time he graduated in 2003, Schoenaerts was already named one of "Europe's Shooting Stars" by the influential marketing organization, European Film Promotion. In 2002, he starred in Dorothée Van Den Berghe's directorial debut Girl (2002) which was also his first feature film since Daens. With his role in Tom Barman's Any Way the Wind Blows (2003) he proved he was Flanders' young actor to watch. In 2004, Schoenaerts produced and starred in the short film A Message from Outer Space (2004. He also appeared in Ellektra (2004) alongside his father. In 2006, he had a small role as a member of the Dutch Resistance in Paul Verhoeven's Black Book (2006) and landed his first starring role in the Belgian film Love Belongs to Everyone (2006) playing Dennis, a mentally-challenged man learning to adjust to life after a prison sentence for a rape he may not have committed.
